Earth Hour…say what?
Ladies and Gents, just last Saturday you could have embarked on saving the world an hour of energy bills. Yes – WWF has been running a campaign now for 7 years to promote the amount of energy the world can save if lights and any electronics went dark from 8:30-9:30pm local time. Basically, around the world you should get a group of friends and dine by candlelight, play Jenga, have a seance – whatever you want to do just switch electronics and gas products off.
So….I knew about it, but did you?
I am guessing majority of the population knew NADA about it – potentially only 5% of the world’s population only really did something. That is because this event has come so far to continue preaching to the converted. Yes – all of you sustainability and green types. We love this stuff. But who else does?
In all honesty, a 1 hour ‘behaviour change’ drill for 1 day out of the whole year won’t really do any good. I am not going to lie, but behaviour change needs much more movement and frequency to garner any good.
That is why we need to embed sustainability into consumerism. Enable the mainstream to transact and do good at the same time. Perhaps this would promote behaviour change in a more natural and regular way.
Let’s take a closer look at what might be doing a bit better. If you took the one-for-one business model, such as Tom’s Shoes or this nifty LifeStraw drinking product, the trend is inevitable. Build a business that enables consumer’s to benefit others that are less fortunate just buy purchasing a product. The transaction makes it more memorable, positive, and tangible.
I don’t want to upset some people who live and breathe Earth Hour here. All I ask is for more people to recognise how to impact society in a better way. Stop just creating awareness and talking about it. The mainstream are an apathetic bunch. People don’t really give a @$(U@(%*(!!! They want to know what’s in it for them. How is it going to benefit me? Why not start to enable people to purchase good things. The converted who are purchasing good are now doing good. These same people should now understand the psychology behind converting more to do.
One hour out of 365 days a year is just not enough any more.
