Get up and create something
On one sunny Saturday in April that is just what happened. Thanks to the Rails Girls meetup, I was able to create a web application whilst learning Ruby on Rails 3.2 – although it was quite simple – it felt quite fulfilling.
So here it is..
I have to admit, a monkey could have followed the clear step-by-step instructions to turn words and commands into action. However, the day helped me think through why I find myself interested in programming. Plus meeting all of the other ladies that are inspired to create something and hear their stories of what makes programming interesting to them helped make the day interesting.
So what Rails Girls does is quite exciting. It breaks down the barriers to learning code for a day helping ladies (and soon to be men) learn Ruby on Rails.
There is a bit of geekiness in me, learning HTML and old skool UNIX back at Uni, I built my first basic website more than 10 years ago. I kind of lean more to programming mobile apps by the day but really need to get stuck in. However my normal creation mentality is to make physical things. Recently I like finding ways to re-use products in different ways, such as making paper mache bowls out of old receipts which was my last creation…and I now have been sculpting away with Play Doh.
Making something digital is certainly a goal of mine and the Rails Girls meetup has lit a small flame of hope and intrigue to get things going. Thank goodness for this brilliant day! Even though you weren’t going to become an expert it still let’s you get a feel for it.
